While not strictly a reading activity, it is fun, nonetheless! On Christmas Eve, the Military personnel at both of NORAD’s Colorado, USA base and its’ Manitoba, Canada base jointly track St. Nicholas on his important journey around the globe. For a history of the “Track Santa’ program, click here. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is a bi-national United States and Canadian organization charged with the missions of aerospace warning and aerospace control for North America …..including Saint Nicholas and his team of reindeer.
Not so many years ago, My brother Matthew and I would watch Canada AM on December 24th. (Canada AM is a morning television news program, much like the Today Show with Matt Lauer). Often, the reporter would be interviewing a high level general from the NORAD base in Winnipeg , Manitoba. This General would look very serious during the interview as he explained that they were tracking Saint Nicholas’ Australian leg of his journey. We were always gleeful knowing that Saint Nicholas was on his way to our house in Canada, in less that 18 short hours. Apparently , it is Rudolph’s nose which allows NORAD to easily track the sleigh on their military radar. Who knew?
Will you be tracking Saint NIcholas and his sleigh?
I know that Eoin and I will.
